University Diversity & Social Transformation Professorship

The U-M University Diversity & Social Transformation Professorship (UDSTP) was established to honor senior faculty who have throughout their careers demonstrated a commitment to the university’s ideals of DEI through their scholarship, teaching and/or service and engagement. As of September 2022, there have been four cohorts with a total of 27 UDSTPs.

James S. Jackson Distinguished Career Award for Diversity Scholarship

Established in 2017, the James S. Jackson Distinguished Career Award for Diversity Scholarship recognizes a U-M senior faculty member who has made important contributions to understanding DEI through research, scholarship and creative endeavors; who has an outstanding record as an educator in teaching and mentoring; and whose work has focused on issues of importance to underrepresented communities. To date, three faculty members have received this award: James S. Jackson, Patricia Gurin and Arline T. Geronimus.

Inclusive Teaching Professional Development Programs

During the five years of DEI 1.0, the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) developed and offered over 600 programs focused on Inclusive Teaching (now referred to as Equity-focused Teaching) to over 6,400 U-M instructors.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Recognition Awards

During the five years of DEI 1.0 and evaluation year, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) continued to collaboratively support and promote several awards recognizing individuals and groups of faculty, staff and students whose efforts have significantly contributed to building a more diverse, equitable and inclusive campus environment.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Innovation Grant Program

This initiative—now completed—was active in the first three years of the five-year DEI Strategic Plan. Over the course of the three-year grant period, a total of 283 proposals were submitted by students, faculty and staff and reflected a broad range of issues and concerns. Sixty-three proposals were selected for full or partial funding for a total of $282,000.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Data Support

Since Year One of the DEI Strategic Plan implementation, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has partnered with the Office of Budget and Planning and University Human Resources to build a repository of diversity-, equity- and inclusion-related data to support the planning needs and decision-making in the 50 planning units.

Diversity Scholars Network

The National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) generated a campuswide directory of nearly 400 U-M scholars who are conducting DEI-related research, and identified areas of expertise to organize clusters of scholars and track their engagement and impact, and to provide professional development and networking opportunities.
